It was thought that this would be done at the time of the 1270 Sixth Crusade, but it is now believed that this document was written around 1270. Some historians believe it is fake and not authentic, including Elio Demetrio Gallo, who wrote about it in 1776, arguing that many of its facts are false. Gallo's doubts were published in Italian for the first time by Ferdinando Garibaldi in 1874. The fact that this document appears in an article about the Sixth Crusade's return has led some historians to believe that there was another return earlier than 1270. The document mentions the city of Naples, which was captured by the crusaders in 1266, and states that it should be returned to King Charles of Anjou. This happened in 1268.
